The People's Council of Cagayan de Oro

The OYDC attended the consultation entitled: "Providing social accountability intervention to foster constructive engagement of stakeholders in local government affairs of Cagayan de Oro City" funded by the Asian Development Bank.

Its main objective is to create  a multi-sectoral, citizen-led People’s Council that will sit in the different committees and special bodies of the local government unit. The representation in these bodies are the entry points for social accountability for the attainment of the people’s agenda.
In the OYDC is enthusiastic in being part of this engagement as a member of the youth sector.
In the discussion to further hone the People's Agenda,  we have manifested three areas that the council should explore. One of which is an ordinance that shall facilitate crowd-sourcing. In this ordinance, public hearings are extended to social media platforms such as facebook, twitter and whatnot. The opinions, comments, thoughts, and manifestations of the Kagayanons will be in the legislative records and will be put into consideration before passing an ordinance. Second, we told the body to push for a "stigma-reduction" on HIV-AIDS considering that the city has become a hotbed nation-wide for HIV-AIDS. We have to stir more discussions on this issue and educate the barangays. And third, pass an ordinance that shall regulate the selling of liquors to minors. Since it is already evident that our minors are being accommodated by scrupulous vendors.

We hope that this long term engagement will facilitate political change in our locality particularly the poor's access to political power.

Youth-led Information Drive in Camamanan: #hinlotabai

Youth volunteers from the Pagasa Youth Association of the Philippines (PYAP), Association of Young Leaders of Mindanao,  Kabatanonan sa Barangay 35, founding-member organizations of the Oro Youth Development Council led an information dissemination drive in barangay Camaman-an on the specific time for garbage collection on September 7, 2014.

This was accompanied by other youth volunteers and officers of Barangay Camamanan, CLENRO, and CSWD of the Local Governmet of Cagayan de Oro.

The volunteers distributed information sheets which states the route and time where and when the dump trucks would collect garbage on specific collecting areas. The volunteers paraded along the side walks talking to residents and business owners.

The theme of the information drive is “Mang Hinlo ta Mga Higala para sa limpyo na Cagayan de Oro”, an offshoot of the Higalaay Festival.

This is just one of the efforts in a broader movement to raise the level on solid waste management in the barangay level. The OYDC has a seat in the city’s Solid Waste and Management Council chaird by Xavier University President Fr. Bobby Yap.
